ANNUAL REPORT 2021
IACA's Dean presented his credentials to the Director-General of United Nations Office in Vienna
The year 2021 saw the continued involvement of the Academy in various anti-corruption events and the enhancement of its network of partners. IACA continued to engage in international cooperation activities with a wide range of stakeholders.
The Dean of IACA continued his involvement in activities within the framework of the High-Level Panel on International Financial Accountability, Transparency and Integrity for Achieving the 2030 Agenda (FACTI Panel). The Panel was conceived to improve the chances of achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by making recommendations that both strengthen current efforts to combat illicit financial flows, and close gaps in the international system. The report of the Panel was published in February. Subsequently, the Dean engaged in activities to promote the recommendations contained in the report. In particular, he took an active part in the FACTI Panel briefing in Southeast Europe in March, and the Briefing for European Governments and civil society organizations in April. The main aim of these events was to raise the awareness of civil society actors and government officials about the FACTI Panel recommendations to reform and revitalize the frameworks, mechanisms, and tools for enhancing financial integrity and transparency.
The Dean of IACA remained involved in the International Gender Champions (IGC), a leadership network of decision-makers who break down gender barriers and make gender equality a reality in their spheres of influence. Under this initiative, he continued efforts to pursue gender equality and women empowerment in the fight against corruption.
IACA took part in various international and regional conferences, seminars, and meetings. In particular:
- The Dean of IACA participated in April in the conference on "Global Importance of IACA and Comparative Strategies in Combating Corruption" organized by the World Compliance Association - Colombia Chapter in collaboration with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Colombia, the Embassy of Austria in Colombia, and IACA. The purpose of the conference was to contribute to and strengthen the knowledge required to develop academic capacities and enhance international cooperation on the fight against corruption.
- In April, IACA co-organized, in coorperation with the Accounting Chamber of the Russian Federation and the Institute for Legislation and Comparative Law under the Government of the Russian Federation, the 10thEurasian Anti-Corruption Forum devoted to "Constitutional waymarks in combating corruption". - In September, under the framework of the 2021 European Forum Alpbach (EFA), IACA and EFA co-curated a session on “Securing Trust” in public life. The event focused on trust as an economic, political, social, and legal currency. The main conclusion from the discussion was that cooperation among all stakeholders is a prerequisite to face the challenge of countering corruption in an efficient and effective manner.
- In December, IACA supported the international webinar titled "The Impact of Corruption on the Most Vulnerable" organized by the National Superintendency of Migration of Peru. The event focused on the importance of raising awareness of the magnitude of corruption in the world and its adverse effects on the most vulnerable, including migrants, as well as the role of anti-corruption education in empowering professionals from all sectors of society to fight corruption.
- Also in December, IACA organized a side event on the margins of the 9thSession of the Conference of the States Parties (COSP) to the United Nations Convention against Corruption (UNCAC) titled “Engaging UNCAC Constituents: The Global Anti-Corruption Cities Network”. The event introduced the Global Anti-Corruption Cities Network (GACCN) initiative, led by the City of Cartagena, Columbia, and participating local government entities and supported by IACA. At the core of the GACCN lies the concept that fighting corruption is key to achieving economic prosperity, sustaining development efforts, and the realization of human rights.
