This four-week course will explore the intersection of anti-bribery compliance and human rights due diligence.  It will first cover the basics of international anti-bribery compliance at the level of both law and practice.  It will then explore the closely related, but distinct, phenomenon of corporate human rights due diligence, looking at leading global corporate human rights laws as well as leading human rights due diligence standards.

Week 1: The emergence of anti-corruption compliance

Week 2: The link between corruption and human rights and the Human Rights-Based Approach to corruption

Week 3: Human rights due diligence in the form of the United Nations Guiding Principles and in a variety of national laws

Week 4: The practical aspects of human rights due diligence.

Learning objective

  • Identify the core components of an anti-bribery compliance plan
  • Understand the primary elements of international anti-bribery law
  • Know the key concepts of the United Nations Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights
  • Understand how the UNGPs have translated into a variety of national corporate human rights laws, and recognize their differences
  • Compare anti-corruption compliance best practices with corporate human rights due diligence

Structure and Workload

Approximately 36 Hours (9 hours per week)

The course is delivered online, and includes pre-recorded lectures, synchronous live lectures, self-assessments, individual assignment and online discussions. It is adapted specifically for professionals in full-time work.

Andy Spalding

Prof. Andy Spalding teaches and writes in the area of international anti-corruption law. He is a member of the Frequent Visiting Faculty at the International Anti-Corruption Academy (IACA) in Austria, Senior Editor of the FCPA Blog, and was the founding president of the American Society of International Law’s Anti-Corruption Interest Group.

As Chair of the Olympics Compliance Task Force, Professor Spalding collaborates with a team of international academics and practitioners, and with the International Olympic Committee, to design and promote Olympic host-country anti-corruption and human rights measures. Professor Spalding writes principally in two areas: international anti-bribery law; and corruption and human rights in mega sports.
