This week, IACA participates in the 11th Session of the Conference of the State Parties of the United Nations Convention Against Transnational Organized Crime (UNTOC COP) held from 17-21 October 2022 in Vienna, Austria.
Topics of discussion of this Conference include the implementation of the provisions on international cooperation, technical assistance and applying UNTOC for preventing and combating transnational organized crimes including trafficking in persons, smuggling of migrants, trafficking in firearms, cybercrime, financial crimes, and crimes that affect the environment. In his statement, Mr. Thomas Stelzer, Dean and Executive Secretary of IACA, underlined that IACA’s “…activities are designed to support the UN efforts to enhance the effectiveness of inter-agency coordination and cooperation in preventing and combating corruption, organized crime, and money laundering.”. He further reiterated IACA’s readiness to closely cooperate with the UN, its Member States, and all interested parties to support the fight against transnational organized crime, corruption, and money laundering.
Moreover, IACA’s Global Programme on Measuring Corruption, together with the Global Initiative against Transnational Organized Crime (GI-TOC) organized a side-event on “New Ways of Measuring Organized Crime and Corruption” on 17 October. The panel, consisting of Elizabeth David Barrett (IACA), Kosyo Ivanov (GI-TOC) and Heather Marquette (University of Birmingham) introduced the Global Programme on Measuring Corruption and the Global Organized Crime Index. Participants also discussed the utility of measures, their relevance for practitioners and policy makers.
