Jeffery D. Sachs delivered an Expert Talk at IACA. Mr. Sachs is a world-renowned economics professor, bestselling author, innovative educator, a global leader in sustainable development and the SDG Advocate for UN Secretary-General António Guterres.
The event, which was conducted in a hybrid format, was moderated by Pawan Kumar Sinha, Director of Academic Programmes at IACA. The Expert Talk was attended by high-level guests, IACA staff, master’s students, and alumni.
Mr. Sachs shared his rich experience in the field of sustainable development, paying particular attention to the challenges in the implementation of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals. In his analysis, he highlighted four major challenges: proper planning, resource mobilisation at the national level, international cooperation and proper implementation of set goals in low-income countries.
Emphasizing the importance of small but sustained processes to achieve SDGs, Mr. Sachs stated, “one does not need to fix everything in order to make an effective transition” and that “we must learn from the medical practitioners about differential diagnosis and having tools to determine the pathway towards achieving the sustainable goals”.
Mr. Sachs lauded IACA’s pursuit of training professionals and capacity building for anti-corruption practitioners. He suggested that IACA should enhance its support in good transparent governance to facilitate the creation of a more equitable global system.
The Dean of IACA, Thomas Stelzer, appreciated Mr. Sachs’s endeavours and added that addressing the budgeting or resource problem in developing countries is essential for meeting the SDGs. He suggested that a strategy to globally reduce illegal financial flows and gather sufficient resources to implement the SDGs is essential. He said, “fighting corruption is no more a luxury, but an imperative”. He also invited Mr. Sachs to cooperate with the International Anti-Corruption Academy to work on identifying the impact of corruption on each of the 17 SDGs.
