The live session phase of Module 2 of the Master in Anti-Corruption Studies and Compliance (MACC) programme in Spanish, concluded on 24 March 2023.
This online module focused on corruption prevention and anti-corruption enforcement from the public sector perspective. The module provided a practical vision based on solid theoretical foundations, starting with the concept of transparency, open government and participation, including a practical "Transparency Lab", where participants prepared an open government commitment, led by Alberto Precht (Chile). The essential elements of whistleblowing and whistleblower protection were then addressed by Franz Chevarría (Peru). In addition, Professor Claudia Escobar (Guatemala-U.S.) discussed important elements for understanding corruption in the judiciary and the investigation and prosecution of corruption cases. In this section, students were also introduced to the role of international cooperation in the fight against corruption. Continuing with important elements of law enforcement, the module equipped students with the necessary skills for asset tracing and recovery, as well as anti-money laundering and protection against financial crime, led by Guillermo Jorge (Argentina).
The module also covered a cross-cutting element in all areas of the fight against corruption, "The Role of Emerging Technologies", taught by Giovanni Falcetta (Italy-Brazil). Finally, the students participated in a seminar where they presented and discussed topics of their interest which will be further developed into academic papers to be presented to the general public at an open event in July. The students are now preparing their assignments, and for the next module which will be face-to-face and take place in Mexico.
