The International Anti-Corruption Academy (IACA) is co-organizing a conference on Addressing Corruption and other Integrity Risks in Climate Finance (Washington DC, 2 - 3 December 2024). The Office of the Sanctions Officer, the Climate Change and Sustainable Development Sector (CSD), the Climate Change Division (CSD/CCS), Amazon ACU (CSD/ACU), the Office of Institutional Integrity (OII), IDB Invest, the World Bank’s Office of Suspension and Debarment, the Green Climate Fund’s Independent Integrity Unit (GCF-IIU), and Transparency International are also co-organizers. This invitation-based Conference will be organized in the hybrid format.
The event will explore corruption risks and integrity challenges in climate finance, providing stakeholders with practical risk assessment and mitigation strategies through collaborative knowledge exchange. While climate finance has reached USD 1.3 trillion annually, it remains significantly below the USD 8.1 - 9 trillion required yearly through 2030 to meet global climate objectives.
The discussion will focus on strengthening collaboration between public institutions, private sector entities, and civil society to enhance governance frameworks and ensure effective delivery of climate finance to intended beneficiaries.
IACA is organizing a panel titled “Climate Change and Corruption Link: The Imperative for Cross-Cutting Research, Education, and Awareness.”
This panel discussion will examine the intricate link between corruption and climate change, focusing on how corruption at various stages - policy formulation, financing, and project implementation - undermines global climate efforts. It will also explore the role of corruption in facilitating organized crime, in particular environmental crimes, which hinders climate mitigation and adaptation. The session will also focus on innovative solutions, including corruption-proofing climate laws, enhancing transparency, fostering stakeholder participation, and leveraging technology. It will highlight the critical role of education, training, and awareness for stakeholders while advocating for collective action initiatives to strengthen anti-corruption frameworks and ensure integrity in climate finance and related policies.
