To support two Collective Action initiatives focused on enhancing integrity and advancing compliance, fieldwork activities were conducted in Abuja, Nigeria from 25 to 28 February 2025. These efforts were led by the International Anti-Corruption Academy through its Anti-Corruption Collective Action Impact Centre, specifically targeting Nigeria’s public administration and port sector.
In this framework, a three-day workshop aimed at strengthening ethics and integrity was organized. Over 60 public administration officers participated in this event, which featured a series of panel discussions addressing theories of behavioral change and the challenges of investigating economic and financial crimes within Nigeria’s legal system. The workshop also served as a platform to showcase IACA’s work and highlight the potential role of Collective Action in preventing corruption.
Additionally, during this field visit, IACA representatives provided support to a second Collective Action project aimed at preventing corruption in ports. Several meetings were held with stakeholders and key anti-corruption agencies, emphasizing the adoption of a Consequence Management Framework in port administration to enhance compliance. These activities helped further engage stakeholders from government, the private sector, and civil society in a collective effort to promote integrity and compliance in the sector.
Representing IACA on this visit were Martin Zapata, Senior Academic Programmes Officer, and Shuhan Liu, Project Assistant. Martin Zapata delivered presentations highlighting the importance of Collective Action in fostering collaboration across sectors to combat corruption.
Ms. Hauwa Garba and Ms. Maria Gowon, both participants in the Anti-Corruption Collective Action Certificate programme, played a leading role in organizing these activities, with support from their organizations, including the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission of Nigeria, the Maritime Anti-Corruption Network, and the Convention on Business Integrity.
